Through rich collections, exhibitions, events, education programs and digital content, Immigration Museum explores themes of migration, identity, citizenship and community through multiple perspectives.

The Immigration Museum opened in 1998 within Old Customs House. Located on the bank of Birrarung (Yarra River), this former administrative centre of immigration and trade is a site of great historical significance and complexity.

Accessible toilets are available on the ground and first levels of the museum:

Ground level

  • Festival Courtyard (Accessible) has a door width of approximately 800mm and a right-hand transfer.
  • Discovery Centre (Family toilets/ Baby change table/ braille) has a door width of approximately 750mm and a right-hand transfer.

First Floor

  • Getting in Exhibition (Family toilet) has a door width of approximately 750mm and a right-hand transfer. All toilet doors open inward.

There are two accessible entrances to the Immigration Museum:

  • Via the gate on Market Street (near the corner of Flinders Street) and along the ramp to the main Flinders Street entrance, which has automatic doors.
  • Via the ramp further up Market Street, which leads into the Festivals Courtyard. There are automatic doors at the rear of the building. The central corridor then leads to the Flinders Street foyer.

Due to the Immigration Museum's heritage status, access to the front entrance is limited for wheelchair users and others who need step-free access.

There is no on-site parking at Immigration Museum.

The nearest public car parks are:

  • Secure Parking: 376 Flinders Street
  • Wilson Parking: 15 William Street

There is a taxi and car share parking on Market Street.

Train: Flinders Street Station. Approximately 350m walk.
Southern Cross Station. Approximately 900m walk.

The doorway is a flat, paved surface with no step.

The kerbside Market Street is a gentle sloping curb.

If you have sensory sensitivities or are feeling overwhelmed during your visit, you can borrow a free sensory bag. The bags contain:

  • Noise reduction earmuffs
  • Fidget tools
  • A communication card

Sensory bags can be borrowed from the admissions desk located in the entrance foyer and returned to the same location at the end of your visit.
