Chunky Move holds developments, dance classes and performances across both studios throughout the year. The building is also referred to as Ngargee, a Bunurong word for describing a gathering for celebration.

The rusty steel building has become one of Melbourne’s architectural icons. In the words of its architects Roger Wood and Randal Marsh, “The building is designed to make reference to its function…a sculpture in which to show art. It was also designed to support art practice in an optimistic way…and to be a robust laboratory for experimentation.”

If you have any questions about accessibility or want to share anything about your access needs beforehand, please call the venue directly via 03 9645 5188 or email info@chunkymove.com.au.

Visitors to Chunky Move can access the Studios and all other spaces via the lift (buttons between 920 and 970 mm above floor level) or via the stairs. There are 35 stairs, with a landing halfway, and a handrail on both sides.

Doors to each studio and bathrooms are clearly identified through signage. There is tactile and braille signage identifying each bathroom.

There is a gender-neutral bathroom. This bathroom is a wheelchair-accessible RH bathroom.

All general public spaces, including studios/performance spaces and quiet space are wheelchair accessible.

A quiet space can be created in the meeting room. This room has low, warm lighting, soft furnishings, a coffee table and plants.

There is a large window that overlooks the staircase, and out into the courtyard. Two other walls are a translucent orange surface.

This space is directly next to the staircase, and main foyer, and as such there is a significant level of noise transfer.

There is paid, timed on-street parking available near Chunky Move on Sturt Street, Grant Street and Dodds Street.

If you require closer access to the building please call ahead on (03) 9645 5188, contact the National Relay Service, or email info@chunkymove.com.au and a team member from Chunky Move will be able to assist you.

86 Dodds Street (back entrance) is a quieter street, and has a pull in space for drop-off/pick-up.
